  • Bending Around Obstacles Like an Ocean Wave Hitting a Buoy

    Lyrics:
at the bottom of a muddy well in the cracks of a suburb overpass i know you lied the things you do and wasting all this time worrying when all i had to do was keep my mouth shut life is easy turning to the other side living is so easy tamed like little pets i know you lied the things you do the strings you move

    Notes:
If you had the chance to study stuff like networks and telecommunications (and you are good) youll probably know what the fuck this title is.. I was studying and I stumbled on this line on a powerpoint slide.. Cool analogy.. Here I tried to go for a weird mix of sounds and arrangments, in a sort of 70s-album-rock way.. I had the idea of adding the rolling coins at the end when one day I was studyng in my room and i let fall.. guess what? Freaking coins!

  • Crash Test Babies

    Lyrics:
cannonball thru my town waking all the neighbourhood all trees get cut sooner or later and all bands reunite we're crash test babies we're always here fireworks in my glass and champagne bubbles in the sky sea foam

    Notes:
I wrote the music in 2004, and did a demo with the acoustic guitar and the bass.. I had some vocals/lyrics but they were terrible.. Then I found out that this song had a very dreamy/psychedelic feel, I did another demo to try the sounds and then I started recording.. The structure is the very same of the first demo.. I added the Bontempi organ, some Deluxe Memory Man overdubs, Ebow.. Tada. Roll up for the Mystery Tour.

  • Hell

    Lyrics:
hell's a bed everything is dripping black walls and bye bye in a room a room on fire when you sleep push me away i'll never let you go cut me here i'll never let you go to disappear to dig a hole different colors a different door lock all belongs to me

    Notes:
This is a simple song written very fast.. Usually all the best songs come in this way, if you have a song you are working on for too long you have to consider the fact that maybe it?s not-so-good-Al (yeah, there are exceptions..) I was jamming in my room and I broke the 6th string, so i tuned down the 5th from A to E and the 4th from D to A, without a tuner, to play bicords, but then I found out that was actually A#.. I just started jamming and.. there it is, in 2 minutes I had the song with the melody..and lyrics too.. An instant hit single in tha bedroom. I did a rough demo and a week later I recorded the basic tracks.. The solo is from that demo, it?s very fucked up, and you can hear that the high strings are very low (weeeooowww), because the guitar was not in tune.. And there?s this strange squeeeeek, a sort of radio interference (a sort of envelope) that i could control physically moving with my guitar around t he amp.. I thought it was very indie rock, so i let it. I?m not a big fan of alternate tunings, ?cause then you have to fuck around to play the song, so if I write a song with a particular tuning then I go back to standard and I find the way to play with it.

  • Japanese Bonus Track

    Lyrics:
did you say something while i way letting the phone ring and ring and ring i look at what they've done to you there is not so much to hope i'm killing time to spend my time and waste my time at the same time vintage garage yellow neon sign and ice everywhere

    Notes:
This song has something in it.. I had this basic riff and I just cut it.. Wrote the lyrics in 2 minutes.. The original idea, when i was still thinking about doing a double album, was to let the final echo ring for 40 minutes..

  • Laws of Gravity

    Lyrics:
and everyday is the fucking same if you are not around i'll kick and scream once more waiting for another day and if you say i'm going down here's where you'll find me unrolled tapes at the side of the road make my way to you i kick a can i stretch my eyes i make a face at the passing cars

    Notes:
I worked hard on this, arrangements-wise, sounds-wise, lyrics-wise, melody-wise.. Every part is 100% developed, from my point of view.. I had 3 versions of this song: an acoustic version, a Moon-type of arrangement and a straightford poprock version.. The new wave version was very cool but it was too similar to Moon and to Smashing Pumpkins.. People says that even this version, the album version, is too Smashing Pumpkins, so.. In my opinion this is very very weezer.. and i created a Brian Eno soundscape after the breakdown playing with 5 guitars every note of the 5-notes hook with the memory man.. God bless that fucking pedal. And then BAM! the wall of fuzz straight in your face.

  • Majorette

    Lyrics:
how's everybody? it's nice to be back got the sun in my eyes and i can't complain sticking hands in the nettles to feel like 6 again anyone? no one will notice if we do it quick enough i tried so hard yes god knows how i did i tried so hard but i can't move on

    Notes:
I had this cool riff and i started recording but i wasn't happy with the song because it felt weak and pathetic.. sounded like a bad parody of an angry song.. so i was going to exclude it from the album.. Then the producer in me said "we need to start the record with a butt kick, and this is the right song.".. So I started my little high school research project: "write a rock song". l changed the lyrics, the melody and re-recorded the guitars in the verses and suddenly the whole dinamics of the song changed and it started working in a proper way. The intention was to scream for the whole song, but after a couple of frustrating vocal sessions I realized i sounded like a retard. The very first lyrics were a bit political/riotous and, since this was supposed to be my/our very first official released song, i was afraid of misunderstandings.. And thematically that early version didn't fit with the rest of the record.. So.. i had to sit down and plan a few things.. But, hey, you wanted the motherfucking rock son g ? Here it is.

  • Moon

    Lyrics:
what's the sense of all this why aren't islands sinking in the freezing warm of summer days what's the meaning of this mess you'll be sorry when i will leave these things behind driving to the moon i stopped locking the door 'cause i feel so lonely the sky is falling on my head i don't care if you don't i'll watch you rot from the sky i'm gonna leave tonight

    Notes:
This is a 2005 song about nothing.. I hate all the lyrics except for the first half of the second verse.. At the time I had a very similar song, with basically the same chords, it was very slow, so for this one I opted for a new wave pop type of arrangement, to not rewrite an identical song.. So here you go, single coils pickups, digital chorus, basic drum machine and my 90s old bad keyboard.. I remember recording the rythm guitar while I was peeking at a House M.D. episode.. I always work on my music with the tv on.. But I totally hate House.

  • Oversleeping

    Lyrics:
i can't say i'm a believer i can't say i'm enjoying your game they're asking me if i am available i'm a dick and i'm ashamed i can't wait to it all becomes routine at least i wont have to think about it at least i'll relax the muscles maybe i just need some sleep [take it away Nick] relax, this is now where you belong

    Notes:
A sort of sad sister of Tilia. Found this easy arpeggio one night, during a break from studying, (I composed 90% of my songs in these moments) and I recorded a quick demo with my cell phone. The solo part immediately popped when I recorded the demo.. Days later we were rehearsing and during a break i started playing it: "ta-da ta-da ta-da ta-da.." and Fabio immediatley "marquee moon?", and i was like "DAMMIT!". But i left it coz i dug it, and i like to incorporate these kinds of citations in my songs (eg. the beverly hills 90210 theme i play live in the middle of the solo of hell ( http://youtu.be/nQHE9vdYytA?t=2m7s ) )

    Lyrics:
i sit down waiting for the end the end of all i've never had i fade away i left the tears where you left my heart? one thousand rooms and you're here again are you?

    Notes:
This is very funny, because this may seem a very serious and complex song, but it?s probably the easiest song I?ve ever written.. I wrote this little progression (D, F#, G), and the ascending (tadada-da,da,da,da..) in 20 seconds with my acoustic guitar, in 2003, and originally that was a joke-song about a friend of mine, with some falsetto vocals a-l? the darkness.. Then one year later I recorded a full demo, and in litteraly 30 seconds i wrote all the rest of the song.. This final version has the very same structure of that quick rough demo.. When I have an input than the song comes itself, like digging a hole and let the oil spray up.. This is one of the first two songs I rehearsed/played with Worlich.. I wrote the final lyrics in 2008, watching our latest perfomance and translating the sound of what I used to ad-lib live into actual words.. Easy uh? I spent 2? hours recording the 35 seconds solo you hear in the middle.. This is the sound of my oldest songs, arpeggios, time switches, mi nimal singing..

  • The Bye-Bye Song

    Lyrics:
[yeah!] it's the first week of december and i'm feelin' blue my friends just dropped me home it's the first week of december and i'm callin' your name [oh oh oh oh oh] the neighbour came here knockin' on saturday night and told them you were gone here i am by myself callin' your name [oh oh oh oh oh] i haven't always loved you but now i think about you you were there every night i came home from the club when i was so drunk i could barely walk i lied on the landing with you and when the sun wak ed me up i crawled up back in bed [she's gone] [she's motherfuckin' dead] and all i've left to do is watch the carpet with a lump in my throat it's the first week of december and i'm feelin' blue it's the first week of december and i'm feelin' blue it's the first week of december and i'm writing this song for you bye-bye

    Notes:
This is about my (then ~12 years+) dog, killed on the night of Saturday, December 5th, 2009, in the crossroads in front of my house. I came home from the movies that night ("Dorian -motherfucking- Gray") and my parents didn't say what happened till the following evening, to not ruin my weekend. The next week I was at a lecture and I was feeling like crap, I was about to start fucking crying in the middle of the classroom.. and then i thought "ok wimp, let's write a song about this". She was a whore. She always snarled at me, from day one, and she was often very very annoying, but, hey, whatcha gonna do?

  • Tilia

    Lyrics:
find your way behind the counter (don't even try) spin the wheel and cross your fingers (don't even try) i just can't so i keep shrugging as my favorite band is turning into a joke i keep making all these crappy songs my favorite band is now a joke (ooh the sunshine) spring is making my head spin yeah spring is making my head hurt yeah (spring is making my head spin) spring is making my head say yes (spring is making) spring is making my head say yes

    Notes:
The first post ND song. A very important one. I was watching telly with my acoustic guitar on my knees and i found that initial thing.. Very Frusciante-y.. All i had was that that 40 seconds riff, and then i wrote all the rest.. The weird thing is that to me the music talks about one thing and the lyrics of another one.. You know the linden tree scent you can smell for like.. 2 weeks in june? that's what the music is talking about. it's fucking heady and reminds me of nursery school. I literally had the "pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-papa" final vocal melody in my head for one year, i was going completely nuts at one point.

  • Transitoria/Tempus Fugit

    Lyrics:
moving like atoms spinning out of touch seems pretty good so far no destination tomorrow comes today and tell me how it feels living in the ashes living in the fog when everything clicks together just like a deja-v?

    Notes:
This is the rock-opera song of this album.. Some old and new riffs glued together.. In 2004 i recorded a 45mins jam called "umbrella factory collapse", basically a lot of riffs chained together, and then i abandoned a second jam i was planning called "big pink pig".. Some ideas of this track are from BPB.. I had the idea of doing a 10 mins track when i wrote the very first riff.. I was under the influence of a lot of caffeine when I composed/recorded this, I'm serious, and I was particularl y obsessed with Brian Wilson's SMiLE, and the breakdown he had recording the fire section of the Elements Suite, (Mrs O'Leary's Cow).. I listened to the original recordings, not the 2004 re-do.. There's a lot of bootlegs out there, get the Purple Chick version, is the best one.. Anyway.. I tried to condense what I had in my head (hours and hours of variations and sounds) into 10 minutes.. I "wrote" the first verses seconds before hitting REC.. My voice is very fucked up because after 2 completely-out-of -tune takes I was starting to get really angry.., but it fits in the mega-crunch of the guitars..

  • walter's sweater

    Lyrics:
    -

    About the video:
"Rushly edited in an afternoon of total bore, I just stumbled on this vintage documentary on archive.org, looking for the keyword 'sweater'.

I kinda liked it, and I started chopping out visually-interesting segments, trying to sync them with the then-freshly recorded, still unfinished, instrumental track.

I immediately edited the "sports" segment underneath the noisy bridge, the epic "four portraits" one under the outro, and the "contemplative look at the picture"; one under the first verse, really liking the combination of audio and video.

Then I basically just connected the dots with other scenes, creating a loose story about a girl and her 3 (best)friends, sobbingly looking back at simpler times.

The "head-turning" gimmick was a last minute idea, and kinda became the central theme of the video.. her, the man in the podium, the girl in front of the school, the father.. alternated in a disorienting/nonsense silly fashion.

    The train arrives, bye bye."

  • Winter Comes Again

    Lyrics:
winter comes again winter never betrays me they're sealing all the junkies, with the cement corks come over stanley's moonwalking to the cardboard door stereotypes and racies i laugh from the beam come on over winter i'm ready winter

    Notes:
A very simple song.. I can?t remember.. I just did a demo, very similar to what you hear on the record, then I wrote the lyrics, the second verse is a dream I had the night before.. I had to pull down the rolling shutters to reduce traffic noise, because the two guitars are fingerpicked and very quiet.. you can actually hear me keeping my breath, the clicktrack coming out from the headphones, the grandfather clock ticking and some heavy trucks outside.. Then I added the organ and E-bow.. He rmit music.. Originally I was going to add a fade out at the end but listening to the rough mixes I loved the mouse clicks.
